Replacement of an old flat asphalt roof using insulation covered with EPDM, a skylight and a new insulated tank box. We had to have a tin roof over the roof for this project, because we knew the roof would be open for longer than a day. The new flat roof will be insulted to the new building regulations. New flat roofs today have to be insulated to a very high standard today.
Inverted roofs, or upside down roofs, have the insulation laid onto the waterproofing membrane. There is normally some ballast to hold the insulation down. The problem with this kind of flat roof is that if maintenance is needed or there is a leak from the flat roof, it’s very difficult to find the leak, as you will see large areas of the insulation have to be removed, just to look at the flat roof covering.
This is a flat roof with a large puddle in the middle. The weight of the water has made the supportive timbers below bend and break. London Flat Roofing Ltd have had to carry out some major repair work and strengthening of the roof to bring the roof back to a good sound condition.
If your roof is leaking, a new flat roof formed from Kemper v210 is a good choice. This system is relatively cheap and comes with a good guarantee. Flat roof repairs can also be carried out using the material. New flat roofs can be layered over the old flat roof, so stripping and exposing the old decking is not always necessary.

This new flat roof is being laid using Kingspan’s ‘cut to falls’ insulation, then covered using EPDM rubber, single ply as the waterproofing membrane. This roof will carry a 20 year insurance-backed guarantee. New roofs today need to be insulated to a very high standard and the depth of insulation on this roof is very good.

Stripping and re-laying the roof to the correct falls was an option the customer thought was too expensive, so it was decided that this flexible liquid roofing system would be used. The system is basically glass fibre ‘GRP’, but the resins have been modified especially for roofing applications like this roof. The end result is extremely satisfying, looks good and can come with guarantees of up to 25 years, depending on the layers we use to build up the covering.
The decking to this flat roof has completely deteriorated. Back in the 70s it was the custom to lay flat roofs on chipboard or straw board. As you can see in the video, when water gets through to the roof decking it’s completely destroyed and cannot even support the weight of the roof laid upon it. The entire roof collapses and there is no alternative but to completely strip the roof back to the bare joists and start again.
The decking on this roof was formed from straw boards, and is completely useless so we had to strip it all and re-lay new decking before laying new EPDM rubber.
