Over the years, an old flat roof can be upgraded. The ceilings below are taken down and insulation is added between the joists, which isn’t necessarily a problem. However, as changes are made in the property below, problems may start to happen.
When I first talked to the customer about the three roofs you see in the photos below, I was asked what material I would use, my answer was “Let the roof choose”! The roof and the customer’s circumstances should choose the roof covering.
100 years ago asphalt was the way forwards, revolutionizing the way we laid new flat roofs, and it was a good material. London is covered with old asphalt roofs, and today the problem we have with them is the cost of replacing them.
This old box gutter was in lead but unfortunately started to leak, as the lead had split in several places The customer wanted a long term solution, so it was decided that the box gutters would be lined with the new SD650 system.
First we clean the old asphalt roof then we work on the old asphalt up-stands you can see we have replaced them with wood and straitened them out this will make the new flat roof look better but also make it easier for us to apply the SD650 liquid roofing system.
Stripping the old system can work out expensive not only to the property owner but to the enviroment as the materials will all go to land fill when dumped. In the video I show you how we clean the top surface of an old asphalt roof and start the process of capping the old roof with one of the new liquid roofing systems the new SD650 roofing system from 3m.
The video shows us installing the new SD650 roofing system over an old asphalt flat roof in Camden. The surface of the roof has already been prepared and you can see us installing the first and second coats of the system.
This is not a liquid EPDM or a liquid rubber, it’s some sort of mix. However without some form of reinforcement, we will not use it as a new roof covering.
The builder has built a new side extension and we left the decking open ready to lay a new single ply EPDM rubber flat roof. Here is a series of photos along with guidance on lining the box gutter with EPDM.
