The repair or the replacement of a garage roof is basically still the same as a flat roof over a house, the economies of scale kicks of make the cost of the new garage roof seam more expensive than the roof over the house. inferior materials are often used on garage roofs just to keep the cost down, this leads to a shorter lifespan and more regular replacement of the roof normally by the next owner of the house. The price of EPDM rubber has significantly dropped and is now so available on the market most roofers are stopping using the old mineral felts on garage roofs and opting for the EPDM rubber. One of the problems we come across with old garage roofs is the decking and unfortunately because the old roof covering has been changed several times over the years the decking is normally a bit sad and also needs replacing, again adding to the cost. Garage roofs and conversions. Now on the lighter side of things a lot of garages are getting converted into living space illegally and legally. When converting a garage into a legal living space the garage roof has to be upgraded and roof insulation has to be added, the garage roof lends itself to be formed into a warm roof [...]
Warm roof or Cold roof Insulation I get asked this question all the time not only roofers calling me but customers who want to know just that little bit more about their roof. Well this video shows warm and cold roof construction and links to a real reroof we did in Chiswick, we changed the insulation in the flat roof from between the joists ( Cold roof construction) to on top of the joist (warm roof construction) at the same time we stop the roof ventilation from flowing into the now “Warm roof ” and placed more ventilation into the existing cold roof areas. We find that not all roofers are doing this as its an additional cost to the customer but if you are going to upgrade to a warm roof you realistically have to do this or you are wasting your time and money. Look at it this way at night you sleep under your quilt if you leave a gap around the outside you get cold. Obviously you can upgrade the edges at another date however until then the warm flat roof is not performing correctly. Another thing to think about when deciding if its a warm roof for [...]
We’ve watched your video on u-tube and wonder if you could give us some advice please…. roof insulation between joist Last year we bought a barn that was converted in the 1980’s. It already has foil-backed insulation in the roof but only 35mm and we would like to increase this – without taking the roof off, as it’s simply too expensive. As far as we know the current roof construction is – from the outside in – slate, barrier, 35mm of a foiled insulation board, covered internally with approx 5mm plywood laid horizontally. Our plan is to add insulation from inside the house. On the ceiling we were thinking of adding in between the joists because we want to keep them showing by about 10-15mm. On the walls the beams are very mixed materials and not great quality so we plan to plaster over, keeping only the A frame main verticals exposed. We are thinking of putting 50mm Kingspan in between the joists on the ceiling, then covering with 12mm board, skimming and painting. The walls we are planning on insulating, boarding, skimming and painting. Is this the right way to approach things or will we have a problem if we don’t put in a vapour barrier? [...]
Hi Steven, We spoke via email about 5 years back. I was asking your opinion on The Kemper Roofing system. After getting your positive feedback I became authorized and have been installing ever since with great waterproofing success. Over the years I have had the some complaints and wanted your opinion. Complaints – Primer drying time. Kemper drying time and sticky texture for months. How the cold or damp weather can put a complete stop to installation. Over burden products and color choices. Basically using the Kemper as an actual finished walkable terrace surface does not seem practical with their product line over a wood frame roof. The inability to hide the overlap seams. The visual look of roof after a few years is very unattractive to say the least. Turns a very dirty, mildewy black color. Difficulty in understanding entire product line and tech support not very helpful. Seem to get mis or different information depending who I speak to at Kemper. They only seem to push the products they want to sell. Like the 2 K Pur, which I do not like at all for large areas. Only use on shower pans. There are other products that seem to take care of most of these issues I [...]
I can attend the property and carry out repairs to the main roof around the solar panels and the area around the skylights for the sum of £220+vat normally repairs will work and last for over 6 months however I cannot guarantee to firstly find the exact problem and secondly if I find it guarantee it will last, however using some of today’s new roofing products we have a great success rate. The other option we explored was a cheap way or rejuvenating the roof to give a long-term solution. The Gaco roofing system is Ideal for your roof its got a manufacturers guarantee of 20 years expected to last well over 50 (It will probably outlast the building) Your roof area is 200m2 and the cost to apply the Gaco roofing system will be £7800 Cleaning and some preparation works will need to be undertaken before coating can take place and I estimate this will cost £1500.00 Scaffolding will be needed to all elevation of the roof without going out to scaffolders for pricing I can only take an educated guess at the cost of this so assume £3500.00 All prices are +vat If any of the above options are to your liking any you need me to send you [...]

Sir, We run a small charity in France. We have a small house where all kind of people find rest. The two boxgutters are badly leaking. Professionals in France swear by zinc and tin. Liquid application considered an heresy. I have little choice but writing to you having noticed your pedagogic YouTube channel. It would really be of great help would you find time to answer my question on: ( Is the second white coat a UV protection layer ? ( if yes are you happy with it ?)) Keep up the good work.
Hi Steve I’m a keen diy enthusiast building a single storey one room (Lounge) extension. I am going to have a rubber membrane flat roof and have been doing some research online. Your videos crop up in the search results frequently. I must say – thanks for the information, it’s great that people like yourself aren’t afraid to pass on your knowledge. I’ve been trying to find the definitive answer to the best way to create a warm flat roof that isn’t too tall, but there are so many conflicting views! I live in the midlands and I’m looking for a bit of advice (concerned about doing the wrong thing), is it possible to pay for your advice via email? My building control officer says it’s all right to place 2″ of Celotex insulation that won’t need a vcl because of the foil, straight on to the furrings, then a ply/osb deck and EPDM membrane on top. And then place some Rockwool or more Celotex in between the joists/furrings against the underside of the main Celotex slab. I can’t find any examples like this. The other thing I can’t find out about – our roof will overhang the building by a meter or so, [...]
Name: Joe H Questions/Comments: I am in the US and have been told by 3M that the SD650 is not available in the US nor do they expect it to be available any time soon. Do you know of any com parables that might be available in the US? The SD650 looks like just what I need. Anser from: SteveRoofer The SD650 roofing system is the best roofing system I have ever used I’m surprised it’s not available in the USA as it’s an American Company! Try Gacoroof its not as strong but is still good. If you are near Milwaukee ill pop over and see you next week as I’m training at Gacoroof Milwaukee.
